The surgical procedures of maxillofacial region are done under local or general anesthesia. Preoperative procedures for the surgery are designed to improve the outcome of the surgery, decrease the risk for complications, and make the surgery as safe and effective as possible The patients who receive general anesthesia must refrain from eating and drinking for at least 8 hours before surgery. In addition to that; discontinuing prescription that thin the blood, such as aspirin is necessary prior to surgery. If surgery is being done on an outpatient basis, the patient has to arrenge for someone to be with them upon discharge. Even though the anaesthesia has worn off dizziness can last several hours and it is unsafe to drive. If the surgery is being done on an inpatient basis the patient checks into a room. Most patients return to their room after surgery. Outpatients usually go an area designated for same day surgery.

All surgical patients are asked to report to our office thirty minutes prior to their scheduled appointment time.

Preoperative Instructions for Patients Undergoing Intravenous or General Anesthesia:

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for six hours prior to the surgery appointment. This does not apply to the consultation appointment.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office and remain in the building throughout the surgery and recovery time, and be able to drive the patient home.
  • The patient cannot drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours after the surgery.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing and low-heeled shoes.

Other Special Instructions:

  • Insulin dependent diabetics should receive special instructions from your oral surgeon.
  • The patient must have someone responsible with them at home for the first 2-3 hours after surgery.
  • Patients with asthma should bring their inhalers with them on the day of surgery.
